ABOUT THE POSITION

Indigo Cultural Center is piloting one of the inaugural programs of Indigo Community Healing Arts, Sankofa Dance: An after-school and community-based dance program led by

teaching dance artists who will reconnect Black children and youth to the rhythms of our

African and Pan-African heritage. Sankofa Dance offers dance experiences that promote

cultural pride, positive identity development, and healing to Black children and youth in the

Phoenix community by exploring how contemporary styles of Black dance (i.e., Jazz, Tap, Hip

Hop/Street, Step) are directly connected to our African / Pan-African roots.


Partners and Settings:

• Afterschool programs: public, charter, private, micro, community schools

• Church or mosque youth groups

• Black homeschool groups

• Vacation camps for children

• Affordable housing communities


RESPONSIBILITIES

• Rehearsing and performing as a member of our Sankofa Dance Ensemble. Performing around the Valley of the Sun to raise awareness about Sankofa Dance and to offer enriching educational experiences to groups of children, youth and adults.

• Teaching 10-week dance sessions with children and youth in school- or community-based

settings.

• Availability to attend and complete 4 training sessions. Sankofa Dance instructors will be trained in our Sankofa Dance Curriculum© which includes training on child and youth development; Afri-centric frameworks and principles; integrating various Black dance forms with African dance; healing and trauma-informed approaches in arts education settings.

• Facilitating evaluation and feedback activities to help demonstrate the impact of our work.


IDEAL CANDIDATES WILL HAVE:

• Experience in various forms of Black dance (African; Tap; Step; Street/Hip-Hop; Jazz).

• Experience teaching multiple forms of dance to a range of ages (K-12) in community,

school-based, or creative settings.

• Experience performing as a dance artist.

• A culturally responsive and trauma-informed approach to working with children and youth.

• A genuine love for children and a passion for building joyful, healing-centered spaces.

• Reliable transportation.

• Fingerprint card - Level 1 clearance (or able to obtain a card prior to starting work).

• We strongly encourage applications from individuals who identify as Black or African

American, as well as those who have experience promoting Black culture or working with

Black/African American children. This role is part of a culturally specific program designed to

support and celebrate the Black community.
