Habari Gani: What Is The News?

The Habari Gani Community Conversations and Film Screenings will be a convening–designed to be truly participatory–where attendees will be asked to be active collaborators in shaping conversations and outcomes of each gathering. Habari Gani, a Swahili term that can be translated to “What is the news?” or “How are you?”, is used as a greeting during Kwanzaa meant to illicit the Kwanzaa principle of the day during the week-long holiday. For ICHA, Habari Gani signifies the importance of our interconnectedness to each other, our communities, and the land, that is needed for collective well being and health.

Habari Gani Convening Goals:

  • To build meaningful new relationships among local, state, and national leaders.

  • To identify key priorities within and across sectors as a step toward a broadly shared agenda.

  • To spark new collaborations that can shape the future of community mental health and healing arts in the Black community.

Our Partnership with NEB Productions

Looking for Laura Nelson, now in development by NEB’s founder and filmmaker, Bruce Nelson, “delves into the intricate web of his family history, unraveling a shocking tale of glory, tragedy, and joy, as he uncovers the Lynching of two relatives in 1911 in Okemah, Oklahoma.” We will partner with the project to host a series of screenings and discussions to further the impact.

Convene With Us

This convening is about building relationships, identifying shared priorities, and laying the groundwork for collective action to advance children’s racial learning as a vital developmental domain. Across key sectors like parenting, education, media, advocacy, community-building, health and mental health, we want to build on our current momentum to improve how and what children learn about race, racism, and racial justice in the United States. Together we can sow the seeds of more purposeful, collaborative, and effective action.
